There’s a garden in an empty lot
a few blocks from my house.
At some point, someone mulched it deep
with compost, and staked and pruned.
The fence is broken, though…
two little rabbits eat the peas,
and last night something
ate the carrot tops.
Racoons are in the corn,
And bugs are munching squash vines.
The sunflowers turn their faces
with the sun,
looking for the master gardener
to come and mend and weed and tend to them…
if she comes soon,
the plants will set new fruit,
and bloom,
and thrive again.
