Take it Further: When We Cannot Erase by Ross Wilbanks

Blot out my transgressions, for I do not understand in our individualistic society how to acknowledge race. Shared race does not mean I share in another’s actions. What was the social agreement I violated?

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, for I see it as a never-ending illusion to keep demanding apologies, as if all the chatter from bystanders will help in healing.

What do you want me to do?

Cleanse me from my sin, for I would rather die to myself, alone in a room, than be “one” with a group singing a song I probably would not like anyway. Do we even state the gifts of corporate worship?

Purge me and I shall be clean, for diversity and the increasing populations scare me. Creeping chaos levels everyone’s belief to materialistic economics. I do not trust your plan, Lord, as something beyond my understanding.

What else can we all agree on?

Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow, for I cannot erase the horrible images recorded. Our expanded purview under endless video threatens to crush me.

What use is rest when we are all under completely different schedules?

Hide your face from my sins and blot out my iniquities, for I fear my striving for creativity as one big error. I see a faceless limestone tower with gargoyles atop deaf to the screams of the foundational stones below. Years later, scientists come and prove that the stones don’t actually scream, that it was a mere wind whistling through their decayed openings.

Inside the stack of reasons, when will we see the mystery?
